This Read Me document provides information about your LaserWriter Select 360 that is not covered in the user’s guide. You may want to print this Read Me document and keep it for future reference.
BEFORE INSTALLING THE DRIVER SOFTWARE
• When you install your LaserWriter 8.0 driver software, it replaces your PrintMonitor and Backgrounder software. If you use System 6 and need to use an older version of the LaserWriter software, make backup copies of your old PrintMonitor and Backgrounder before installing the new software and keep them for later use.
• When you install your LaserWriter 8.0 driver software, it does NOT replace any older LaserWriter software you have installed on your Macintosh. When you open the Chooser, you will see both the LaserWriter 8.0 icon and the LaserWriter icon. If none of your application programs require the old driver, you can remove it by dragging its icon to the trash. You can find the icon in the Extensions folder inside your System Folder (if you use System 7) or in your System Folder (if you use System 6).
• Some files on the disks that came with your LaserWriter Select 360 have been compressed. You cannot install these files by dragging them into your System Folder; you must use the Installer (on the first disk). Any file that has been compressed has “.cmp” added to its name.
ABOUT THE LASERWRITER UTILITY
You use the LaserWriter Utility application program to change some of the printer’s settings. The LaserWriter Select 360 comes with the latest version of the LaserWriter Utility. Do not use older versions of the LaserWriter Utility with the LaserWriter Select 360.
When you install your LaserWriter 8.0 driver software, the LaserWriter Utility is not automatically installed. To install the utility, open the Installer and click the Custom installation button. Choose the LaserWriter Utility from the list of software you can install. Click the Install button to install the LaserWriter Utility. Note: the LaserWriter Utility is a compressed file, and can only be installed and decompressed by using the Installer.
ABOUT PPD FILES
The LaserWriter 8.0 driver uses a PostScript Printer Description (PPD) file to specify the printing characteristics of your LaserWriter Select 360. When you install your LaserWriter 8.0 driver software, the correct PPD file for your printer is automatically installed, but still needs to be set up to take full advantage of your printer's features.
To set up your PPD file, open the Chooser and click the LaserWriter 8.0 icon. Click the Setup button. In the dialog box that appears, click the Auto-Setup button. The driver automatically sets up the LaserWriter Select 360 PPD file for use. IMPORTANT: if you have installed options in your printer, follow the instructions in the next section to configure your PPD file.
PPD FILES FOR OTHER PRINTERS
PPD files for the LaserWriter Pro 600/630, the Personal LaserWriter NTR, and the LaserWriter IIg can be found in a folder named LaserWriter PPDs on the Printer SW Disk 1.
• If you use System 7, you will need to drag and drop the desired PPD into the Printer Descriptions folder in the Extensions folder which resides in your System Folder.
• If you use System 6, you will need to drag and drop the desired PPD into your System Folder.
• Follow the steps previously discussed to set up the driver to use the PPD with the desired LaserWriter.
PPD files for other Apple LaserWriter printers are available from your Apple Dealer. PPD files for other postscript printers can be acquired from the specific printer vendor.
CONFIGURING DRIVER FOR USER INSTALLABLE OPTIONS
If you have installed options in your printer (for example, a memory upgrade or an optional sheet feeder), you need to configure your PPD file to use the printer’s full capabilities. To configure the PPD file, open the Chooser and click the LaserWriter 8.0 icon. Click the Setup button. In the dialog box that appears, click the Configure button. In the dialog box that appears, choose the options you have installed on your printer.
If you have installed the optional 250 or 500 sheet feeder, you can make it the default cassette by using a special PPD. (When you print a document, the printer uses the default cassette when you choose Auto Select in the Print dialog and the paper in the default cassette is the size you chose for the document.) This PPD file, named "LW Select 360 lowerdefault", can be found in a folder named LaserWriter PPDs on the Printer SW Disk 1.
• If you use System 7, you will need to drag and drop this PPD into the Printer Descriptions folder in the Extensions folder which resides in your System Folder.
• If you use System 6, you will need to drag and drop this PPD into your System Folder.
• Follow the steps previously discussed to set up the driver to use this PPD with the LaserWriter Select 360. In this case, you will must click the Select PPD button to select this special PPD since the Auto Setup only selects the standard LaserWriter Select 360 PPD.
ABOUT CREATING EPS FILES
When creating an Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) file with the driver’s “Save” option, note that:
• When you save an EPS file, the options you choose may make the EPS file very large. For example, both the Include All Fonts option and the Unlimited Downloadable Fonts option can significantly increase the size of the file. If you choose both of those options, your EPS file may be extremely large.
• If you print an EPS file with no fonts included, the text in the file may be printed in the Courier font. However, the correct fonts will appear on the screen if you open the file.
• EPS files with preview information included may not be accurately displayed by some applications. Applications that create their own PostScript code are likely to have this problem.
USING THE 8.0 DRIVER
• If you choose the larger print area option, the layout of some of your documents may change.
• If you print using A4 size paper, have chosen Manual Feed as the Paper Source, and have B5 size paper installed in your printer, the page will be clipped to match the B5 paper size.
• If you select 2-Up or 4-Up printing and want to include a Cover Page, choose the After Document option for the Cover Page.
• Printing multiple documents with the Finder may not work if the documents have been created by different applications.
USING THE LASERWRITER 8.0 DRIVER WITH APPLICATION PROGRAMS
Some application programs do not yet take advantage of the new features of the LaserWriter 8.0 driver, or have small incompatibilities that result in printing problems. If you experience problems with an application program, contact the publisher of the program. In some cases a newer version of the application may be available.
The following list describes some known problems with specific application programs. You may find other application problems not listed here.
Aldus Freehand 3.1
• You cannot print using Layout options in the Print dialog box. If you choose a layout from the Layout Pop-up menu, the document does not print and no error message appears.
• EPS files created from within Freehand with the LaserWriter 8.0 driver’s “Save” option cannot be used in other applications.
• Selecting the Unlimited Downloadable Fonts option in the Page Setup Options dialog box results in a PostScript error.
Aldus PageMaker 4.2a
• You cannot scale EPS images in documents printed using the Layout option in the Page Setup dialog box.
Aldus Personal Press 2.0
• Using several font style combinations in text can result in spacing problems.
• When working with large EPS files in a document, you may need to increase the amount of memory allocated to the application.
Aldus Persuasion 2.1.2
• When printing documents that contain gradient fill patterns, the document is printed with solid patterns instead of gradients.
Aldus SuperPaint 3.0
• When you print documents that contain rotated or filled polygons, a PostScript error results.
Canvas 3.0.5
• Printing documents using the Calibrated Color/Grayscale option in the Print pop-up menu of the Print Options dialog box results in a PostScript error.
CricketDraw III 1.0
• You cannot import an EPS file created with the LaserWriter 8.0 driver that has been saved without preview information.
• Be sure that enough space is available on your hard disk when printing large documents, otherwise the application may malfunction.
CricketPresents 2.0
• You cannot import an EPS file created with the LaserWriter 8.0 driver that has been saved without preview information.
Informed Designer 1.3
• Shaded headings in a document may not print correctly.
MacDraft 2.1
• When you print using the Cut Marks option, a PostScript error results.
More 3.1
• When creating EPS files with the LaserWriter 8.0 driver, be sure you have enough disk space to hold the file. No Disk Full error message appears when your hard disk becomes full and cannot hold the entire file.
Microsoft PowerPoint
• In PowerPoint version 2.01f, you cannot import an EPS file created with the LaserWriter 8.0 driver that has been saved without preview information.
• Increase the memory allocated to the application in order to import EPS files.
Microsoft Works 3.0
• Printing documents that have rotated objects with rounded corners results in a PostScript error.
Publish It! Easy 2.1.9
• Use an earlier version of the driver, or contact the publisher of the application program.
Quark XPress 3.11
• You cannot print EPS files created by the LaserWriter 8.0 driver that contain certain TrueType fonts.
ReadySetGo! 4.5 & 5.0 (DesignStudio)
• Use an earlier version of the driver, or contact the publisher of the application program.
Studio/8 & Studio/32
• When creating an EPS file with these programs and the LaserWriter 8.0 driver, you must select the QuickDraw Printer option.
SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT APPLICATION INCOMPATIBILITIES
• When printing with some applications, the Printer Status boxes may appear overlapping or misaligned on the screen, preventing you from canceling printing by clicking the Cancel button. Press Command-Period to cancel printing.
• If you see unexpected format results when you print a document, choose Page Setup and check whether the paper size is shown as Other. If so, select the correct paper size.
• Utility programs that attempt to change your current printer without using the Chooser may produce unexpected results.
